Ganesh chaturthi is one of the most important festivals of India. Ganesh chaturthi is the Hindu festival celebrated in honour of elephant-headed god, Ganesha. The festival lasts for about ten days. The festival is celebrated in public and home. The public celebration involves installing clay images of lord Ganesha in pandals.
The festival is celebrated in a very public manner. Local communities compete with each other to put up the biggest and best Ganesha statue and display. Expect very crowded streets, filled with boisterous devotees, and lots of music. At home, a small clay image is installed and is worshiped by family and friends. At the end of the festival, the clay idols are immersed and dissolved in water. Ganesh chaturthi is celebrated in India and other parts of world like United States, Canada and Mauritius. Mostly in the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. One of the best places to experience the festival is in the city of Mumbai. Celebrations take place in a special way at the towering Siddhivinayak temple, located in the central suburb of Prabhadevi, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. |

The Muslims all around the world celebrate Eid two times in a year, Eid ul-Fitr and another one Eid-ul-Adha, which happen around ten weeks later from Eid-ul-Fitr. Eid ul-Fitr is one holy festival for Muslims, which marks the end of Holy Month, Ramadhan. On the day of eid Muslims pray namaz (there the ritual prayers prescribed by Islam). Then everybody gives Salam (men and women separate). It signifies the end of Ramzan (the 31st day).
The entire family is together at this time. They visit mosques and offer prayers in the form of ‘Namaz’. They embrace one another and exchange Eid greetings. ‘Eid Mubarak’ is on the lips of each Muslim. They donate alms to the poor on the auspicious occasion. Family is important and kids get Eidi (gift from elders as a form of blessing). All the relatives come together and celebrate it.Dates are the most common food taken to break the fast .Shirkhurma is the main sweet dish (it has sev cooked in milk and sugar) then biryani (rice steam cooked with meat and spices) Family members and in some families, close family friends attend the festival. But mostly everyone prefers to do it at their own places. Houses are cleaned before Eid to celebrate simplicity and stay focused on fasting. They also decorate their houses. After the 30 fasts, Muslims achieve self control and patience and that’s why eid is celebrated. It also carries a social connotation. The significance of this festival is a good time to bring people together in harmony and gratitude. The celebration of Eid promotes national integration and the feeling of brotherhood. Joys are doubled when they are shared. Eid brings a message of brotherhood for all of us.Many groups and cultures do respect this festival and give salaam to their Muslim friends. |
